BE NICE TO BUGS DAY - JULY 14
Why July 14?
I don't know. Most references to Be Nice to Bugs Day are on websites that seem to be populated with scaped data and contain the same blurb about someone named Kiana Monson making this day in 2021. If there is any place that elaborates on what observing this date is supposed to entail, it is not easy to find.
What is the difference between a bug and an insect?
Colloquially, the words are interchangable words. For pedants, "bugs" can only refer to "true bugs", which are a type of insect. See: If all bugs are insects, but not all insects are bugs, how do you tell them apart?
What meaning can you give to this day?
Some ideas:
- Take a walk in your neighborhood and record what flowers are in bloom, what plants are dying away, what kinds of insects are around and what are they doing? Take note of which plants insects prefer for food and nesting
- Commit to plant a flower that will be in bloom for next year around this time
- As you would any other day, abstain from bothering or harming insects. As always, watch your step.
- Make banners, signs, shirts, knick-knacks, etc. that remind people to Be Nice To Bugs.
